Although it is one of few routes to a career in the trades, apprenticeship is not well understood outside the skilled trades community. Apprenticeship is a form of post-secondary education that teaches people the skills they need to achieve competencies and perform tasks to the industry standard within the trades. Many of the benefits of this form of training are obvious – apprentices earn while they learn, developing trade-specific and transferable employment skills. Certification enables mobility across the country or around the world, and can be the starting point for supervisory, management or entrepreneurial opportunities. Skills shortages in the trades are increasing demand for people with an interest in hands-on career opportunities.
CAF-FCA has partnered with Skills Canada to create a number of tools and resources explaining apprenticeship and the benefits of skilled trades careers to youth, educators, parents and employers. As part of their “Skilled Trades: A Career You Can Build On” national campaign, booklets, guides, pamphlets and posters were developed.
