Engaging Youth: Attracting Young People to Careers in the Trades
Canada is simultaneously experiencing high youth unemployment and a shortage of workers in the trades. This volume will explore the challenges, solutions and promising initiatives associated with attracting and retaining youth in the skilled trades. Authors will be invited to address career exploration programs for young people, youth apprenticeship programs and work placement opportunities, as well as initiatives designed to raise awareness among parents and other youth influencers.

Focus on Aboriginal Apprenticeship Initiatives
Employers, jurisdictions, Aboriginal groups and apprenticeship stakeholders are making big strides when it comes to engaging the Aboriginal population in the skilled trades. A young and growing source of workers in the trades, Aboriginal peoples already make up about 5 per cent of the skilled trades workforce across Canada, and are represented at an even higher rate in remote areas. Canadian and international authors will be encouraged to showcase programs and initiatives that engage and support Aboriginal participation in the skilled trades.

By facilitating information exchange, these two volumes will help address common labour market challenges related to youth and Aboriginal unemployment, inefficient school-to-work transitions and skills development. Positive labour market outcomes might include:

  • More efficient and direct labour market attachment for youth and Aboriginal peoples by sharing strategies that engage these groups and reduce the barriers to participation
  • Improved worker skill sets by exchanging information on how to better prepare youth and Aboriginal peoples for apprenticeship programs and increase Essential Skills levels in the trades
  • Better completion rates by identifying barriers and discussing the supports that can facilitate certification for youth and Aboriginal peoples
